Show Notes

Today I spoke to Rebecca Undem: Author, Speaker, Farmers Wife, Mom, and coffee lover!

Her book “How Mommy Got her Groove Back” is about her journey of self-discovery, her liberation from the expectations of other and her confident redefinition of success.

Her mission is to inspire women who are juggling a career and a family to seek their groove and live B.I.G. regardless of where they live or what they do

Our topic today was Overcoming Perfectionism, and ironically, during this episode we had a MAJOR tech issue where I totally lost my audio, so I had to type my questions to Rebecca!! She was totally amazing and shows that you can’t control everything and you just have to keep going and do your best.

I think you are going to love this episode.

This is a topic that’s close to Rebecca’s heart, and in her words “I am standard, Type-A, control freak type of person. I also grew up in a very rural community (which I’m living back in now!) and literally had the eyes of everyone close to my family on me at all times. My fear of screwing up and looking stupid is practically innate and I became a “good girl” that never wanted to disappoint anyone.”

She shares her experience of the biggest run-in with perfectionism when she returned home and became a mom. She says “I read all the books, took all the classes. I was planning to be as close to a perfect mother as I could be. Then, reality hit.” I know I can relate to that!

Rebecca shares how she learned to “forgive” herself for hating the entire experience of breastfeeding. It was the most shame she’d ever felt about anything in her life because the decision didn’t affect just her. And ALL the doctors, nurses and even her friends told her it was best for her baby. It was as if only a crazy person wouldn’t stick it out.

That experience showed Rebecca how truly important it is to follow your own instincts because no one else is you.

Rebecca has been in “perfectionism recovery” ever since. (She has 3 beautiful kiddos now!)

She also shared how professionally being able to keep perfectionism in check is what made the publishing of her book possible along with her speaking career.

We both agree in our experiences, that perfectionism is a vicious cycle. The more we chase it, the more we believe that mistakes only arose because we weren’t quite good enough, causing us to chase perfectionism all the more. (It’s depressing to even read that, isn’t it?)

It also numbs us to the positive things in life, keeps us from learning and finally, it inhibits connection. And seriously, who wants to be perfect and alone?

Real and Raw Live – Episode 3

Real and Raw Live – Real conversations around the emotional journey of being an entrepreneur. Our topic today is Perfectionism with Heather Clark.

Posted by Susan Deans on Wednesday, 28 June 2017

Show Notes

Today I was joined by Heather Clark from Home Office Detox who helps people clear their physical clutter, so they can clear their mental clutter. Heather believes that our external clutter is a reflection of our inner clutter, and she is on a mission to help declutter one home office at a time.

Today we talk about perfectionism and how we feel this pressure to have the perfect life. Life is Real and Raw and sometimes messy! I have to say I LOVED this talk with Heather so much and I know a lot of women will relate to what we are talking about, especially if you are a mum.

Perfectionism is about trying to earn approval and acceptance. We learn this from a young age We are raised being praised for achievement and performance (school grades, having to have perfect handwriting, perfect manners, the way we look, sports, for doing what we told, people pleasing). Then as we grow we adopt this belief that says “I am what I accomplish and how well I actually accomplish it”.

We break down what all this means and how it affects our lives (and not in a good way) and what we can do to break this negative pattern. Some of the topics covered are:

  • How social media is an unrealistic portrayal of peoples lives, and the impact it is having on our feelings of “not being good enough”
  • What do we need more of as leaders
  • What we miss out on by trying to make things perfect
  • How perfectionism stops us from being creative and sharing our work into the world
  • Professionalism VS perfectionism
  • “Perfectionism is just an excuse not to move forward”

And sooooo much more!
